    Most of the affirmative action at Harvard is devoted to giving jobs to people who have gotten advanced degrees at Harvard and other Ivy League schools.

    He is the Director of the W.E.B Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research. That doesn’t necessitate another language, I have professors here at Cornell that head research in place like Sri Lanka while not speaking the language (did I mention they were old white guys?)

    I don’t think you understand how such positions are gained at Harvard. Ivy League institutions rarely tenure and Harvard is notorious for not giving tenure unless you one of the ultimate leaders in your field. In order to be in the position he has, he has had to research, publish, win awards such Carnegie Mellon fellowships and such. There is no such thing as affirmative action at that level of scholarship.

    I have no idea where one would look that up. He has a Ph.D. in English. At the time he received his education, that would have required studying a second language, though he would not have had to achieve fluency. I’m sure that speaking Swahili is not required for his current job, nor is it required for mine, thank goodness.
